On Saturday, August 1, 2009, Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) appeared before his constituents in the entrance to a local supermarket to hear what they had to say about HR3200 (the health care reform bill). Although this event was not widely publicized outside of liberal publications, there was still a fair turnout, mostly of people who opposed the health care reform bill.
Through most of this meeting, it was difficult to see or hear Congressman Doggett. He was not elevated above the crowd and there were no microphones, speakers or even a bull horn. He seemed to have some difficulty hearing questions and even more difficulty making his answers heard.
Some of Congressman Doggett's employees worked with the crowd trying to keep the volume of the heckling down. In this picture, the congressman is listening to a question from one person in the crowd while several others are shouting at him. The extended hand on the left side of the picture belongs to a woman who is trying to silence the angry people in the crowd.
In the midst of an unfriendly crowd, the congressmen caught a glimpse of me and my camera. His smile seems less than confident but not quite insecure. Very few people in the crowd maintained an unbiased appearance. I hope that I was able to capture the true tone of this event and not just relay my own agenda. The congressman has expressed his intent to vote in favor of HR 3200 (the proposed health care reform bill) while his constituents have expressed their desire for him to oppose the bill.
From the parking lot, the crowd looks contained. But it is contained in the entrance to a local supermarket. Had this event been better publicized, it may have filled the parking lot.
