Candle in the Window
When I learned of Uncle Jim's passing yesterday, I lit a candle and placed it in my dining room window. Some time later, Dominic asked how long the candle had been there and told me that it looked like it was burning sideways. I'm not sure what made the wax melt this way. Maybe it was because the window was cold and the room was warm. But I thought it looked kind of interesting and thought I'd share it with you. The rest of the evening, I burned a jar candle.
Thank you everybody for your kind thoughts and words about the passing of Uncle Jim. Happy New Year. May all of you find yourselves being showered with grace, peace and spiritual prosperity in 2010!

Rest in Peace, Uncle Jim. I will never forget the love you brought to my life.

Saints of God, come to his aid!
Hasten to meet him, angels of the Lord!
R. Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High.
May Christ, who called you, take you to himself;
may angels lead you to the bosom of Abraham.
R. Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
R. Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High.

Thank you to all of you who have been praying for my Uncle Jim. He passed away today, December 30th at 5:26PM EST, on the 31st anniversary of my grandmother's passing. I know that she was waiting with the angels to take him home.
David took this image of him with my Aunt Mary, cousin Michelle and me the last time I saw him nearly three years ago.

I only have this camera because my grandmother was born in 1918. It is a 50th Anniversary (1880-1930) Kodak Brownie. 570,000 were made and distributed for free to American children who were 12 years old in 1930. I closed in on the face of the camera to show the details that still remain in the seal. This is an HDR compilation of 6 images with smudge-stick applied in post processing.

Thank you again for all of the well wishes and prayers for my uncle. As of 12:30PM today, I have not yet heard how yesterday and last night went.

Thank you to all of you for your thoughts and prayers for my uncle. I have not yet heard how he did last night. But yesterday, his blood pressure was very low, 65/53 and he was not conscious. So we pray.
Meanwhile, Amy's mom and step-dad came to visit us for Christmas. (Amy is David's first wife who died from breast cancer several years ago.) This image is a portrait we took of them with Dominic, Andrew and Celine. I aged the image a bit to make it more nostalgic.

A sew months ago, I asked my friends here to pray for my Uncle Jim because he was very ill. He recovered from his illness only partially and very slowly. On Christmas eve, he went back into the hospital with a kidney infection that was causing fluid to build up in his body. We have been burning prayer candles for him for the past few days. Last night, my cousin informed us that the doctors hold very little hope that he will pull through this time. We have not heard from her since and do not yet know if he made it through the night.
This picture has some strong imagery related to our faith and our family. In the 23rd Psalm, King David wrote "Even though I walk in the dark valley, I fear no evil for you are at my side". Our hope is always that these words are never more true than at the hour of our death. The rosary draped over the bible represents the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, a prayer that has particular power when prayed in the presence of a person who is passing out of this life. The beads are used to keep count during this long prayer. The rose is a symbol of eternal life in heaven and the evergreen is a reminder of God's never ending love. The Nativity statue was made by my grandmother not long before she passed from her life with us. The Angel may or may not have a particularly strong meaning right now. If I should hear that my uncle has passed, I will post the "Song of Farewell" that the angel represents in which we ask the angels to "Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High". The candle represents two things. It represents our prayers and it represents a custom in which we light a candle upon the passing of a loved one to symbolically light their way to heaven.

Welcome to another episode of Lifestyles of the Penniless and the Ordinary. I'm Tiny, your host for the evening. Join us as we embark on this evening's exploration of the DiCarlos' living room and the tree that recently sprouted through the floor. We'll see if we can figure out what makes it glow at night and what kind... of flowers or fungus is growing beneath it.

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it...John 1:4
Merry Christmas my friends. May the Light of the World always shine on you!

Put it Away in the Manger
The Word became Flesh and dwelt among us!
Imagine a love so strong that the All Powerful would take on the most humble of existences in the most humble of circumstances....that he would choose to become vulnerable just to teach us to love like He loves. There is nothing more powerful than a God who would place Himself in the hands of His own children. May God bless you this Christmas and may He remind you of His power in His gentle loving ways.

Today, our son Andrew turned 14. I think he has enjoyed the day so far. After breakfast he went with us to our church to help set up the Christmas trees by the Altar and the Nativity scene. I can't help but be impressed with the young man he is growing into. A couple of months ago, he told me that he wants to be a Priest. That makes two of our sons who are totally open to God's will for their lives. I was surprised when he told me about his desire and I reminded him that it is important to listen for God's voice in his heart and follow the path God points out for him whether that be married life or Priesthood. Then I asked him why he hadn't told us until now. He said "Because I knew you'd give me this lecture". I guess they do hear what we tell them, huh? Happy birthday Andrew. I don't know if I am going to see your hands anointed in Priesthood or given to a wife in marriage. But I do know that I will cry with joy on that day because my little boy has become a man who listens to God's voice. But for now, you are 14. May God make you a holy man! I love you.
