"A man is never dead until he is forgotten".
This evening we had the privilege of witnessing a POW MIA Remembrance. The guest speaker, Major William Roberts Jr. was shot down in Europe on July 7, 1944 and was held POW for 11 months. He honored his POW and MIA brothers this evening with the words "A man is never dead until he is forgotten". This ceremony is one way our vets keep their brothers "alive". The scene in the picture is a table setting with one place setting for each of the five branches of the armed services. Each hat is brought reverently to its place setting by an ROTC student. If you have ever been inside a VFW office, you may have noticed the MIA chair and place setting that is always there. The following poem explains its presence:
The Empty Chair
If you notice there is a banner
Draped over an empty chair
Dedicated to the ones who can't be there.
They were called to war, so they had to go
Where they are now, only the Lord will know.
Some are POWs that is our belief.
Some are MIAs these we may never see.
So if you happen to pass the empty chair,
Give a nice solute to the Comrades that
You don't see there.
May the good Lord bless those that are there?
May there never be another empty chair?
