***COME AND TAKE IT***
You've probably seen the flag even if you don't know its history. It's a Texas icon and it comes out every time Texans feel a need to defend their liberty. It is a uniquely Texan flag that originated in 1835 at the Battle of Gonzales (the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution). It was fashioned as a response to a demand from Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea (commander of the Mexican army) for all of the arms possessed by the residents in the area, including a small cannon that had been gifted to them a few years earlier. The colonists flew this flag as a statement of defiance, and they prevailed in the skirmish. Now, it is just one of the symbols of Texan defiance that comes out with pride when Texans rally.
This particular rally took place on the steps of the Capitol yesterday. It was a response to President Obama's visit to Texas to fund-raise for Democratic candidates. Ironically, the Democratic candidate for Governor decided that he was too busy to meet with the president and the only person who showed up at the airport to greet the president was Texas' Republican governor. There were a lot more people at the "Hands off Texas" rally in the evening than there were at the airport in the morning.

Here is a link to a video of one of the speakers yesterday. He explains the meaning of the flag. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbvtXRO5W3A
